Nikkei
The Nikkei 225 is a price index that tracks the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s performance. Although the Nikkei stock index receives little public attention, it is a leading indicator of world markets. Market participants overlook the Tokyo Stock Exchange, which is the world’s second largest financial center by market capitalization after Wall Street, by focusing on US and European stock indices.
The Nikkei 225 remains the most important barometer of Japan’s economy due to its proximity to China, sophisticated technological position, and close ties with the United States.
There are well-known company names featured, including Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Sony, Nintendo, Nikon, and Softbank, among others. The Nikkei is computed using the unweighted average price of the index’s 225 stocks.
